514,188. Dyes ; intermediate products. MANCHESTER OXIDE CO., Ltd., CLAYTON, J. H., and BANN, B. April 30, 1938, No. 12924. [Class 2 (iii)] 3:3<1> - Dimethyldiphenyldisulphide - 4:4<1> - bis - (azo-#-naphthol), which is a valuable red pigment, is made (1) by treating 5-thiocyano-2- aminotoluene with alkaline agents to convert it into the corresponding disulphide, tetrazotizing and coupling with #-naphthol, (2) by dizaotizing 5-thiocyano-2-aminotoluene, coupling with #- naphthol, and treating the product with alkaline agents to convert it to the disulphide, or (3) by diazotizing 5-thiocyano-2-aminotoluene, converting the product by alkaline treatment into a diazotate or isodiazotate of the disulphide tetrazonium salt, treating with acid to produce a normal tetrazonium salt and coupling with #-naphthol. The alkaline treatment may be effected by caustic alkali or an alkali polysulphide, with or without the addition of an oxidant, and the coupling may be effected in presence of turkey red oil. Examples are given.
