b -Hydroxy-alkylpyridines are prepared by fusing the corresponding sulphonic acids, other than a -picoline-b -sulphonic acid, with an alkali. The starting materials may be made by the process described in Specification 335,817, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]. Examples are given of the preparation of b -hydroxy-g -picoline and b -hydroxy-b 1-ethyl-a -picoline. Both products couple in alkaline solution with diazotized p-nitraniline to give a red colour which turns yellow on addition of acid.
