328,292. Major & Co., Ltd., Hinchliffe, H. H., and Darby, W. J. Jan. 19, 1929. Monoazo dyes suitable for the production of lakes are made by condensing azo dyestuffs derived from 2: 3-oxynaphthoic acid with one or more equivalents of an aromatic sulphonyl chloride in the presence of an alkali. In examples (1) the dyestuff 1: 4-toluidine-3-sulphonic acid # 2- naphthol-3-carboxylicacid is treated with ptoluenesulphonchloride (two mols.) in presence of caustic soda; the product contains two aromatic sulphonyl groups. (2) The dyestuff 2-chloro-5- toluidine-4-sulphonic acid # 2-naphthol-3-carboxylic acid is similarly treated with p-toluenesulphochloride (1 mol.).
