[Class 20 (iii)] A sliding window sash 3<1> is raised and lowered by one or more flexible rods 4 connected centrally to the top edge of the sash and having a screw-thread which is engaged by a rotatable nut in a gear-box 5. The rod may, as shown, pass around a guide 10 and may be fitted with an end stop 9 for limiting its movement when it is moved by the nut to open the window. The hand drive may be fitted with a slipping clutch adapted to prevent undue strain. In a modification, the rod extends vertically and the handdriving mechanism is mounted on the upper member 2 of the window frame and in another modification the nut is mounted on the member 2 of the window frame and may be driven directly or by a flexible shaft connected to a winding handle at the side of the window. The rod may be connected directly to the upper rail 3 of the sash or it may be fitted with a spring 7, Fig. 5, upon which the sash is supported. According to a further modification, the nut, which is fixed to the frame member 2, remains stationary and the rod is rotated, the hand-driving mechanism for the rod being mounted on the upper rail 3 of the sash. According to the Provisional Specifications, two vertical rods may be employed, engaging nuts driven by a common handle.
