SASH LIFTER AND FASTENER.
Application filed January The invention relates to means for adjusting the height of the upper sash of a window and also to fasten the sashes in adjusted position, and has for its object the provision of an adjustable rod pivotally mounted on the upper stile of the upper sash of a window, the rod being adjustable and being adapted to be used for raising and lowering the upper sash, and to hold the two sashes either in a closed position or partly open position as desired. The in vention also contemplates a particular construction of sash lift and fastener of the type referred to, in which a tubular rod is provided with a cross head and an open tubular member is provided in which the tubular rod is pivotally mounted, the tubular member being provided with a circumferential slot to permit the pivotal movement, and another rod is slidably mounted in the tubular rod and held in adjusted positions relatively to the tubular rod by means of a set screw, the free end of the slidable rod being adapted to engage the top stile of the lower sash to hold the two sashes in a closed position, or in any adjusted open position.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmental view of the upper and lower sashes of a window showing one of the improved sash lifts and fasteners in position,
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3, a detail sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4, a plan view of the blank from which the tubular pivot member is constructed.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The upper sash of a window is shown at A and the lower sash at B. The sash lifter and fastener comprises a tubular rod 1 having a cross head 2 on its upper end that is 9', 1926. Serial No. 80,270.
mounted for rotation in an open tubular member 3 that is adapted to be secured to the upper stile of the upper sash A by means of screws or other driven fastenings 4-, the opening in the tubular member 3 permitting of inserting and removing the driven fastenings i. The under side of the tubular member 3 is provided With a circumferential slot 5 that permits rotation of the cross head 2 and pivotal movement of the rod 1 relatively to the sash A. In Figure 1 is shown the blank from which the tubular member 3 is made.
A rod 6 is also provided and slidably mounted in the tubular rod 1 and held in adjusted position relatively to the tubular rod 1 by means of a set screw 7 the lower end of said tubular rod 6 having a knob or head 8 that is adapted to seat on the upper side of the lower sash B to hold the upper and lower sashes in a closed relation as shown in Figures 1 and 2, or by adjusting the relative positions of the rods 1 and 6 by means of the set screw 7 it will be readily apparent that two sashes may be arranged to permit opening of one or both of the sashes to a limited extent and still hold the sashes in a locked relation relatively to one another. It will also be apparent that the device may be utilized for raising and lowering the upper sash.
What is claimed is A sash lift and fastener, comprising a tubular rod having a cross-head on one of its ends, an open tubular member enclosing said cross-head and adapted to be secured to the upper sash of a window, said tubular member having a circumferential slot to receive the rod and to permit a pivotal movement thereof, a rod slidably mounted in the tubular rod, and means to hold the two rods in adjustable relation, the
free end of the last mentionedrod being adapted to engage the upper end of the lower sash to hold the sashes in. adjusted positions.
