Description
No. 624,874. Patented May 9, m9.

LIFTER FOB SKYLIGHT S'ASHES.
(Application filed Oct. 20, 1898.)
(No Model.)
1 S'IAES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. SAUERS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WALTER S. GILLESPIE, OF SAME PLACE.
LIFTER FOR SKYLIGHT SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 624,874, dated 9, 1899-.
Application filed October 20, 1898. Serial No- 694,071. (No model i To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. SAUERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifters for Skylight-Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a lifter for skylight-sashes.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device for raising skylight-sashes to afford Ventilation.
' The accompanyingdrawings illustrate the invention.
Figure l is a vertical section of a skylight, showing the lifter applied. Fig. 2 is a view of the lifter on a larger scale than that shown on Fig. 1 and givingaview of it as seen from a transverse direction. Fig. 3 is a View of the vertical hanging slideway. I
The two sashes A A are hinged at b to the framework above and are adapted to be opened for ventilation by lifting their lower edges, as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 1.
A vertical bar G has at its top end flanges d,
by which it may be secured to the upper frame of the window, and it hangs or depends therefrom. This bar has a vertical slot e and serves as a slideway, as hereinafter described. Two arms F F have their lower ends jointed together by a pivot or bolt g, which passes loosely through the vertical slot e of said slideway. The two arms are at one side of the bar 0, and a draw-head h is at the other side of the bar, and the pivot or bolt 9 connects the arms and said draw-head. A cord I is attached to the draw-head and therefrom extends up to a pulley j, secured to the flange d laterally, each arm in a direction opposite from the other, and the upper ends of the 5 arms are suitably jointed or hinged to the sashes. I have shown in the drawings an ordinary screw-eye 7a, the threaded point of which screws into the sash-frame and the eye of which is jointed to the arm F.
From this description the operation will be readily understood. When it is desired to lift or open the skylight-sashes, the cord 11 will be pulled, with the effect to raise thedrawhead It and also slide upward the two arms F i F". The upward movement of the two arms will move the sashes. As the sashes are raised the top ends of the arms will gradually spread farther apart. By securing the lower end of the cord to asuitalole fastening device the twosashes may be kept open.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A lifter for skylightsashes having in combination a vertically-slotted bar; two arms at one side of the bar and jointed at their lower end by a bolt which projects through the slot in said bar; a draw-head on the other side of the bar and attached to said bolt; a pulley above; and a cord attached to the draw-head and passed overthe pulley.
I 2. The combination 0f the two hinged sashes; the vertical guideway hanging from the framework above the sashes; an arm jointed to each sash and the two arms jointed together and slidable up and down the guideway; a pulley attached to the frame above; and a cord working over the pulley and adapted to draw up the jointed ends of the said WILLIAM H. sAUERs.
