Abstract

450,892. Hand-cranks. SLEIGH, H. L., CHESTON, A. S., and STUART, F. J., Widney Works, Bagot Street, Birmingham. April 5, 1935, No. 10528. [Class 136 (ii)] In winding handles or cranks for raising and lowering windows, shutters, &c. on vehicles, ships, &c. and of the type incorporating slipping- clutch mechanism permitting interruption of the drive when a predetermined driving-strain has been exceeded, a spring- actuated plunger or member is incorporated in the handle for slipping engagement with the winding shaft, such plunger or member being adapted to retain the handle normally in position on the shaft and to transmit the drive from the handle to the shaft in a manner permitting relative movement between the handle and shaft when a predetermined driving strain is exceeded. The arm 4 of the crank is provided with a passage 5 communicating with a hole 6 in a boss 7, this hole fitting over the end of the winding-shaft 8, which is provided with an annular groove 14 in the base of which at one side of the shaft is formed a conical recess 15. A plunger 16 with a conical end 17 is mounted in the passage 5 and is forced by a spring 18 into the recess 15, in which position drive is transmitted to the shaft 8. If a predetermined driving force is exceeded (e.g. when a window &c. meets an obstruction), the plunger 16 slips out of the recess 15 into the groove 14, whereby the drive is interrupted, the groove 14 preventing detachment of the crank from the shaft. The compression of the spring 18 is adjusted by means of a screw 20, which passes through and secures the centre pin 10 of the grip 9. The grip 9 is rotatable on the pin 10 and is resiliently mounted by means of a spring 11 interposed between the base of a recess 12 and a head 13 on the pin 10. A rod 19 held by the screw 20 forms a stop to limit the outward movement of the plunger 16. The plunger 16 may be replaced by a steel ball, and further modifications of detail are described.
