Abstract

518,538. Sliding windows. DUTFIELD, A. E.,. RAWLINGS, E. J. and RAWLINGS MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Aug. 25, 1938, No. 25021. [Class 20 (iii)] The top edge of a sliding window, particularly for vehicles, is fitted with a central nut engaged by a bodily-stationary flexible rod extending vertically across the window space. As shown, the nut 5 is secured to a channel 6 on the top edge of the movable panel 2 of a half-drop window the flexible rod 4 having its lower end secured in a bracket 7 on a channel forming a guard-rail at the top of the fixed panel 1. The upper end of the rod 4 is mounted in a box 8 secured to the top frame member and fitted with bevel-gears and an operating-handle 9. In a modification, the operating-gear is shown fitted at the lower end of a rod. According to other modifications (not shown), the operating- handle may be arranged at a remote point, the rod 4 being extended and guided (if necessary) around rollers : the nut 5 may be fitted inside a casing and formed with external teeth to mesh with a pinion actuated by the operating handle, in which case the rod 4 would be non-rotatably mounted in plain brackets; means may be provided to enable the window to be quickly adjusted from inside or outside the vehicle; e.g., a split nut may be used which is normally closed to engage the thread on the rod but is opened when direct upward pressure is applied to the window. Specification 514,161 is referred to.
