Abstract

507,088. Window regulators. WILMOT-BREEDEN, Ltd., and SMYE, A. Jan. 21, 1938, No. 2023. [Class 20 (iii)] A regulator for vertically-sliding windows comprises a rotatable screw-threaded shaft or shafts mounted horizontally above the window, a pair of flexible members attached to the ends of the window panel and accommodated in part within the window guides, axially-movable but non-rotatable nuts mounted on the shaft of shafts and connected to the flexible members for operating the window, and hand-operable means for rotating the shaft or shaft. In the construction shown, two threaded shafts e are mounted in a housing d at the top of the window frame and each carries a bevel wheel f engaging with a pinion g of the operating crank handle. Mounted on each of the shafts e and slidable along the housing d is a nut i, to which the end of a flexible metal strip j is connected. Each strip passes over a guide k or a pulley at the upper corner of the window frame and is connected to the upper corner of the sliding panel a. The edges of the metal strips engage with guides m in the housing d and vertical guides b, in order that they may operate both in tension and compression. According to a modification, a single cross-shaft may be employed, having right and left-hand screw threads for engagement with the nuts i. In order to prevent straining of the mechanism, a slipping clutch may be incorporated in the hand-operating means, or stops may be provided which prevent stressing of the flexible members when the window has reached either of its extreme positions. For example, the spindle of the operating handle may be furnished with a nut slidable thereon during the movement, of the window, but arranged to prevent operation of the handle when the window reaches either end of its travel.
