[Class 59.] In a mill for crushing coke &c. a screwthreaded spindle 17 is connected to each journal of the displaceable roller and carries a spring 22 between a dog 19, in which the spindle is adjustable and which normally abuts a rigid support on the frame of the machine, and a flange 23 adjustable longitudinally on rods 24 relatively to the spindle 17, the flange being adjusted by nuts to alter the compression of the spring, the roller being adjusted independently by the rotation of the spindle 17 in the dog. As shown, the roller 1 is mounted in fixed bearings and the roller 7 is adapted to be adjusted horizontally in a recess 5. A main drive shaft 10 is mounted in a vertical plane below the shaft 8 of the roller 7 and drives the latter through gears 12, 13. The roller 1 is driven from the shaft 10 by gears 14, 15, 16 or by a chain. Movement of the roller 7 to an adjusted position in the slot 5 does not interfere seriously with the meshing of the gears 12, 13. The ends of the roller 7 are adjusted simultaneously by screwing the rod 17 through the flanged dog 19, the end of the rod engaging the bearing 6 of the roller 7. The dog 19 is forced against the casing by the spring 22, the pressure of which is adjustable by the flange 23 and the moving roller is maintained in parallel alignment with the stationary roller by levers 20 fixed on a transverse rod 20<1>. Both rods 17 are rotated simultaneously by a worm and wormwheel.
