Abstract

513,178. Pipe joints. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and PLUMPTON, W. April 4, 1938, No. 10270. [Class 99(i)] [Also in Group XXII] In making a welded joint between an overhanging pipe and a pipe extending downwardly therefrom one of the pipes extends downwardly from a sleeve screwed to the ends of the pipes and welded at its opposite ends thereto, the weld metal at the lower end of the sleeve being deposited between the sleeve and an annular ledge on the portion of the pipe below the sleeve in order to eliminate overhead welding. The ends of the pipes 2, 3, which may be thickened in two stages 14, 13, have the parts screwed to engage a sleeve of somewhat greater length. The upper end of the sleeve is square and is fillet welded at 17 to the part 14 of the overhanging pipe 2. At the lower end of the part 14 of the downwardly extending pipe 3 is provided an annular ledge preferably in the form of two half-rings 4 spot welded thereto. The lower end of the sleeve is bevelled at 6 preferably at 60 degrees, and weld metal is deposited electrically or otherwise in the space between the ring and the end of the sleeve.
