Abstract
470,669. Pipe joints. STEPHENTSON, A., and BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. July 27, 1936, No. 20784. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A joint between metal pipes and tmion sleeves or multiple branch fittings is made by forming the fitting &c. at its end with or mounting in or adjacent its end a preformed fusible jointing ring of relatively high surface tension metal or alloy so that the ring may be fused directly by a blowpipe or other heating medium and the continuity of the internal surface thus preserved without internal cavities, projections, &c. at whatever angle the joint is situated. For joining iron or steel pipes, cast irons, stainless steels, bronze, copper, brass or silicon brass may be used, for copper pipes, brass, bronze, copper-silver alloys or silicon brass, for aluminium pipes silicon aluminium alloys and for lead pipes lead tin alloys. The sleeve 1, which may have recessed ends, may be of a metal or alloy of melting point lower than that of the pipes 2, but of high surface tension, the amount to be melted being determined by forming grooves 4 or ridges 5 at the desired positions. Pipes may be similarly united in a multiple branch fitting, formed with internal shoulders to abut against the ends of the pipes. Holes may further be drilled in the fitting to supply solder of low surface tension to solder the joint between the pipe end and the interior of the socket part of the fitting. In another form a sleeve of metal similar to the pipes has lugs 8 to hold on its end a wire ring 7 of the high surface tension fusible metal. The pipes abut shoulders in the sleeve. In further forms, a resilient split ring may be inserted in a recess in the end of the sleeve with its end projecting, or a split ring may be slidable on and resiliently held on the pipe adjacent the sleeve. In another form, Fig. 10, the ring 7 may be cast or fused in an undercut groove in the sleeve, and openings 11 also provided for molten metal. In Fig. 11, rings 7 may be cast or fused in the sleeve 1 or be preformed and split or in sections inserted in the recess. In another form a ring is cast on the end of the sleeve. A resilient split ring 7 may also be seated in the end of a flanged sleeve 1, Fig. 13, or a semicircular ring may be secured to the end of the sleeve or a circular ring soldered or welded thereto. The size of the rings may be varied to suit the thickness of the pipes.
