Abstract

Butt joints. - In wrought metal tubes of the kind provided with integrally formed external flanges or collars adapted to be engaged by loose coupling members upon the tubes, the shoulder is formed by turning the end of the tube back upon a liner or sleeve A located on the outside of the tube B. The liner A fits closely around the tube B, and, when the fold B<2> is made, the latter is firmly compressed upon the liner. The exposed end A<3> of the liner may be welded to the tube and to the fold by providing a liner which is shorter than the fold and filling the channel formed thereby with brazing or welding metal, or by providing a fillet of welding metal around the shoulder formed by the liner and tube end to form an inclined face against which the coupling member will bear. The jointing face B<4> formed at the fold may be either substantially fiat, or rounded owing to the folding action; or it may be formed with a concave face so as more effectually to retain the joint ring, the adjacent end of the liner being correspondingly shaped in each case.
