[Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In welding together a number of openended cylindrical sections such as in making a well or bore-hole lining, and in which internal tubular members extend between the ends of adjacent sections to facilitate location and prevent distortion during welding, the internal member consists of a ring which is unbroken over the whole or greater part of its length, and which is first attached to one section by welding at its inner edge so as to serve as a locating-spigot, and the adjacent section is secured to the ring temporarily by screws, riveting, &c. prior to effecting a circumferential weld between the sections so as to prevent distortion during welding. In Fig. 1, a ring b welded at c to the upper section a is tapered at its lower end to facilitate insertion into the lower section d. The ring is secured by screws j to the section d, and the sections welded together at h, either or both of the sections having bevelled ends. In a modification, the lower end of the ring may have slits instead of being tapered. In another modification, Fig. 3, the ring b is of smaller diameter than the sections a, d, and a packing-sleeve g is placed between the ring and the section, or the ring expanded to full bore size.
