Abstract
511,878. Centrifugal pumps; stuffing-box substitutes. LA BOUR, H. E. March 29, 1938, No. 9584. Convention date, Nov. 15, 1937. [Classes 110 (i) and 122 (v)] In a vertical self-priming centrifugal pump with a trap for a priming charge and an air separator on the discharge side, a sealing sleeve surrounds the shaft and is connected to the separator so that a circulation of liquid occurs through the sleeve during both priming and normal working. The shaft 10 carries an impeller 16 in a casing 20, 29 having main and secondary discharge throats 134, 135 leading to an annular space 52 at the bottom of the separating chamber 48. This chamber 48 communicates through a screen 68 with a passage 66 leading to a chamber 75 in the lower end of sleeve 57. Chamber 75 leads through flow constrictions 76, 77 to the impeller inlet and overflow pocket 36. This pocket has a return pipe to the suction inlet and a constriction 78 leading to a pocket 79 housing a slinger 80. Specifications 478,862 and 511,304 are referred to.
