Abstract

508,582. Surface carburetters. DURR, F., and BRANDENBURGISCHE METALLVERARBEITUNGS-GES. Jan. 7, 1938, Nos. 502 and 503. Convention dates, Jan. 11, 1937 and Oct. 20, 1937. [Class 7 (iii)] Fuel is atomized by high-frequency vibrations of a member acting on the fuel 'in a chamber which is separated from a mixing-chamber to which the combustion air is admitted. As shown in Fig. 1, a constant level of fuel is maintained by a float 10 above a crystal or quartz plate 9 which is vibrated electrically 300,000 times per second so as to produce resonance in the quartz plate. The atomized fuel is drawn through a pipe 7 past a non- return valve 8, which prevents damage due to back-firing, and is mixed with air admitted through ports 4 controlled by a rotatable sleeve 5. In the modified construction shown in Fig. 3, the float 10 maintains the constant level of fuel in a tapered chamber 29, the top of which is formed by a perforated plate 32 or sieve disposed at the focus of a parabolicallyground quartz plate 9. Large particles of fuel passing through the plate condense and are returned to the chamber 29. The atomized fuel is mixed with a small amount of air admitted through ports 36, 37 controlled by a spring-pressed valve 39, and the rich mixture is delivered past a valve 40 on the valve 39 before being mixed with the main air which enters through ports 44. A slide 41 which simultaneously moves axially and rotates controls the ports 44 and the position of the valves 39, 40. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the vibrations may be effected by mechanical means. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
