Abstract

503,198. Surface carburetters. WUNSCH, W. H. G., and ROLLAND, R.'J. A. Sept. 29, 1937, Nos. 26426 and 26427, Convention dates, Sept. 29, 1936 and May 28, 1937. [Class 7 (iii)] An adjustable valve controls the fuel inlet to a chamber where the fuel is vaporized before being mixed with air passing through, the inlet pipe.. As shown in Fig. 1, fuel is admitted to a chamber 1 through a pipe 7 controlled by a valve 22 actuated with a throttle 9 in the air inlet pipe 8. The fuel vaporizes in the chamber 1 and is delivered into a Venturi 13 in the air inlet pipe through a tube 11. A baffle (not shown) prevents fuel passing directly from the pipe 7 to the tube 11. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, a slot 33 in a cylindrical valve 31, rendered fluidtight by a spring-pressed packing 37 and rotated through links 38, 38<1>, 38<2> with a throttle valve 54 in the inlet pipe 57, controls the admission of fuel into a vaporizing chamber 40. A spring-pressed piston 49 subject through a pipe 53 to the suction in the mixing chamber 40 controls plates 47<1>, 47<2> which vary the size of the air passage 36 adjacent the end of a nozzle 46 through, which the fuel vaporized in the chamber 40 is discharged. The chamber 40 is surrounded by a water jacket 41 and contains a grid 44 through which exhaust gases are passed. In the form shown in Fig. 6 a rotary valve 63 controlling the air inlet passage 57 also rotates a hollow cylinder 31 having a port 33 which controls the fuel inlet port 34 to a vaporizing chamber 40 surrounded by a water jacket 41. The vaporized, fuel is delivered through a nozzle 46 into the air stream. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes a modified carburetter in which fuel is vaporized in a float chamber and delivered past a sector-shaped valve into the air inlet pipe, the sector-shaped valve being coupled to a throttle valve in the air inlet pipe. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
