The central seat part 21, Fig. 1, has extensibns 24,' 25 hinged thereto, and is mounted in a frame formed of slide members 13, 14 connected by cross members 15, 16 on which the side members 38 can slide. The back member 26 has hinged to it a pair of extensions 29, 30 each of which is connected by a crank 53, 54 and link 55, 56 to the side member 38 on the opposite side. The extensions 24, 25 are connected to the side portion by link 46, 46 so that on extending they are turned upwards and engage catches 59, 60 on the wings 29, 30. The arrangement is such that the chair is extended by turning the wings 29, 30 thus extending the side members and turning the seat extension up. Additional cushions 25 may be housed in the side members. A modification is described in which the back extension in place of being connected to the opposite section is connected by a link to the arm extension on the same side, and also one in which the side arms are in one with the hatf sections of the back, the back being disposed under the seat and connected by toggle links. to the arm extensions.
