Abstract

507,334. Fusible cut-outs. BUXTON, S. Dec. 13, 1937, No. 34519. [Class 38 (i)] A cut-out is provided with a fuse element bounding an evacuated space. The element 3 is in the form of a cylinder of metal of high conductivity such as silver and is mounted in an air-tight manner between massive metal endblocks 1 and 2, preferably of copper, the space 4 being evacuated. The end caps are enclosed in an insulating cartridge 5 and the space around the element is packed with arc-quenching material 6 such as powdered quartz. The caps are provided with stalks 7, and in assembling the cut-out, a metal tube of suitable length is fitted over the stalks so that their ends which may be covered with arc-proof material 9, abut. The ends of the tube are secured to the stalks in an air-tight manner by fitting in the grooves 8 with solder. The tube may then be heated by passing an electric current between the end blocks and the tube is drawn out axially leaving the evacuated space 4.
