Abstract
577,805. Fusible cut-outs. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 9, 1943, No. 18587. Convention date, Nov. 11, 1942. [Class 38 (i)] A fuse having a long fusible section to provide a high resistance arc path to limit the current, has the fuse element 15 (which may consist of one thin conductor, or more in parallel) surrounded by an arc-quenching material in the form of a mixture of coarse and fine particles 16, 17. Fused quartz, silica &c. of 80 mesh and 200 mesh grades mixed together produces a current limiting action without heavy voltage surges. The fuse wire 15 may be wound helically on a ribbed core 14 mounted in a tube 10 of glass, porcelain &c. Ferrules 11 sealed to the tube are closed by caps 13 and the wire 15 is connected to the ferrules by conductive pieces 19 that also support the core.
