Abstract
571,081. Fusible cut-outs. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 28, 1943, No. 17784. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1942. [Class 38 (i)] The fusible element of a high-voltage fuse surrounded by an inert granular material, passes through zones in which the granular material is of different grain size in order that the sudden reduction of current due to the action of the fuse is modified and consequential voltage surges controlled. The fuse element 16 may be wound on a ribbed core 13 and the surrounding space'within the casing 10 is divided by radial partitions 20 so that coarse sand or quartz granules 21 and powder 22 are in contact with successive lengths of the element 16. Portions of the fuse are enclosed in ceramic beads 17 to prevent heat radiation and localize the initial fusing. When the whole fuse melts, the coarse material 21 forms a continuous fused tube, while the fine material 22 fuses into globules, the alternate zones producing a stepped voltage gradient along the discharge path and preventing the sudden increase of resistance that would produce a voltage surge. In alternative constructions, the two grades of filling material are separated by transverse partitions by passing the fuse through several separate tubes as described in Specification 499,254.
