Abstract

1,111,185. Fusible cut-outs. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 7 Oct., 1966 [17 Jan., 1966], No. 44961/66. Heading H2G. An electric fuse comprises a fusible ribbon 15 embedded in arc-extinguishing material 21 and having a plurality of regions of reduced cross-section provided by pairs of notches 30 and apertures 32 formed by pressing out tabs 40 which transfer heat from the necked regions 35 to the filler 21 to prevent the ribbon melting during a temporary overcurrent. The ribbon, preferably of silver, is embedded in quartz sand, passes through washers 17 and is crimped back over the ends of the tube 10 together with the end caps 12, 13. The notches 30 are preferably semi-circular to prevent stress concentration and the tabs 40 are inclined at 45 degrees at least, preferably at right-angles, to the ribbon to prevent arcing between the tabs and ribbon. The ribbon may be corrugated to increase the heat dissipation and to provide stress-relief during thermal expansion. Several ribbons may be connected in parallel. The fuse is said to operate within one half-cycle of the occurrence of a short circuit.
