Abstract

577,363. Fusible cut-outs. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 8, 1944, No. 4314. Convention date, March 11, 1943. [Class 38 (i)] A high-current fuse comprises a glass or ceramic casing 10, containing a granular arcquenching material 21, in which is embedded a star-shaped core 12 carrying a fusible spirally-wound conductor 14, connected to the end-caps 11. The conductor 14 consists of the long wires 15 which are adapted to fuse over a considerable length and are connected by low melting-point solder 18 to the thermal storage bodies 16 connected together by a resistor 19. On sustained overcurrents insufficient to fuse the wires 15, enough heat is generated by the resistor and accumulated in the storage bodies to melt the soldered connections 18 and interrupt the circuit. In a modification, a single wire, resistor and storage body may be used, and the supporting core omitted. Where a long delay in fusing is tolerable the low-melting-point solder may be dispensed with and the wire directly connected to the thermal storage body.
