Abstract
1,108,108. Electric cut outs. S. & C. ELECTRIC CO. 14 Nov., 1966 [24 Jan., 1966], No. 50979/66. Heading H2G. A cartridge fuse comprises a main fuse element 51 connected in series with a plurality of auxiliary fuse elements 40 and corresponding spark gaps 73 connected between the free end of the main fuse element and intermediate junctions 67 on the auxiliary fuses. The fuses 40 are each rated below the main fuse but in combination in parallel rate above it. When the main fuse 51 blows a potential difference is applied to the spark gaps 73 and one breaks down at random as indicated at 84. The whole current then passes through the corresponding auxiliary fuse 40, the major part of the current passing through the portion 68 (which is only a small portion) and through the other auxiliary fuses. The portion 68 breaks down and the whole current passes through the remaining portion 69 blowing this also. The remaining spark gaps break down in turn successively blowing the corresponding auxiliary fuses in similar manner. As shown in Figure 1, a cartridge fuse has a main fuse 50 comprising a silver wire 51 and a strain wire 52 connecting a fixed terminal 47 to a terminal 53 on an indicator tube biased to be forced outwardly by a spring 55 on blowing of the fuse. Spring contacts 58 connect between the indicator tube (and thus the terminal 53) and a fixed terminal 14 for external connection. The auxiliary fuse elements are nickel or silver alloy tapes 40 perforated as a 41 to facilitate break down, wound on an insulating ceramic former 38 and connected in parallel between the terminal 47 and a terminal 25. Metal contacts 66 engage the tapes 40 as indicated at 67 to form the intermediate junctions and have portions which project into openings 71 in an insulating flange 63 and co-operate with a conductive flange 20 to form the spark gaps. The fuse tube 65 is of fibre or inorganic material carrying a material which evolves an extinguishing gas when heated by blowing of the fuse.
