Abstract

1,119,089. Electric cut outs. S. & C. ELECTRIC CO. 18 Nov., 1966 [27 Jan., 1966], No. 51785/66. Heading H2G. In a cartridge fuse of the type described in Specification 1,108,108, i.e. of the type in which a main fuse element is connected in series with a plurality of auxiliary fuse elements, and corresponding spark gaps connect between the free end of the main fuse element and intermediate junctions on the auxiliary fuses, is characterized in that the terminal between the main and auxiliary fuse elements is slidably mounted and retained in place by a strain wire arranged to melt on blowing of the auxiliary fuse elements. As shown the terminal 145 is movable vertically and held in place by a strain wire 146. If as may occur at high fault currents the auxiliary fuses blow while the main fuse 154 is still intact, then, as soon as the extension 143 of a predetermined auxiliary element is blown the current passes through the strain wire 146 which is connected in parallel with it. The strain wire melts releasing the terminal 145 thus allowing the spring 166 to force the inductor tube 161 outwardly to the indicating position. The indicator tube carries a severing member 181 which impacts and severs the extensions 143 of the auxiliary elements when the indicator tube is released as in Specification 1,119,087. In another form (Fig. 1, not shown) the spark gaps are enclosed in arc-chutes as in Specification 1,119,088.
