Abstract

1306919 Fusible cut-outs WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 19 July 1971 [31 Aug 1970] 33761/71 Heading H2G A fuse device having an indicator for showing when the fuse has blown comprises an insulating housing 5 consisting of a front portion 7 and a back portion 9 and formed with three compartments 11, each of which contains a fuse 13 comprising terminals 15, 17 supported by insulating members 29, 31 and having fusible elements 27 connected therebetween. The indicator 37 is mounted behind a hole 39 in the housing 5 in a tube 41 which is sealed between the housing and member 31 by gaskets 43, 45. The indicator 37 is biased to the fuse-blown indicating position by a spring 47 which is normally held in a compressed condition, as shown in Fig. 2, by a V- shaped fusible strain element 35, the arms of which are twisted together forming a portion 81 which passes through the member 31 and gasket 45 to connect with the indicator 37. The free ends of element 35 are soldered to the terminals 15, 17. The resistance of the strain element is greater than that of fusible elements 27 so that with too large a current the latter fuse first and subsequently the strain element fuses to release the indicator under the bias of the spring 47. Voids in the compartments are filled with arc-quenching material 71, e.g. sand.
