Abstract

990,723. Fusible cut-outs. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Dec. 31. 1963 [Jan. 18, 1963], No. 51281/63. Heading H2G. A fuse comprises a tube structure having a central passage with a vent between its ends, and a pair of movable arcing rods disposed in said passage in end-to-end relationship, connected together by a fusible member and biased away from each other so that when fusion occurs, the arcing rods are accelerated away from each other, thus rapidly drawing out the arc. The fusible member comprises a central wire 21, which takes the strain of the spring biased rods 18, and an outer member 22 which is of a lower resistance than the wire 21 and carries most of the current. At one end of the fuse is a rod 30 which moves outwardly with the rod 18 when the fuse blows, the end 30a striking a latch 33 to operate a releasing mechanism which forces the fuse to pivot in a clockwise direction about trunnions associated with the lower hinge assembly 9. This provides a visible indication of fuse operation and additionally furnishes an isolating air gap. Gas-evolving blocks 50 line the passage 53. A condenser 45 may be associated with the vent collecting chamber 40, to de-ionize exhaust gases.
