[Classes 39 (ii) and 75 (iv)] A hand lamp adapted more particularly for use in mines comprises a metal casing b provided with a base plate b<1> of an area less than the cross-sectional area of the casing taken through the walls, and with edges b<2> which are curved outwardly and upwardly in the form of a saucer surrounding the lower part of the lateral walls of the casing, whereby the lamp may be easily slid forwardly of the user without danger of the lamp overturning. The handle q<3> of the lamp is secured to a frame q<1> of channel section which is attached to a cover plate p by a nut s screwed on a stud r extending through a central hole in the channel, an additional hole t<1> being provided in the latter to receive one of a number of pins t or spring- pressed plungers provided on top of the casing so that the handle can be adjusted into a number of predetermined positions. The lamp socket d, is mounted on an insulating block c disposed against the front wall of the casing and provided with two vertical grooves within each of which is disposed a metal strip, the lower ends of these strips respectively making contact with the centre contact of the bulb f and the metal wall of the socket d. The upper end of one strip is bifurcated to receive one limb of a U-shaped contact member l<1> which is in abutment with a contact member m attached to one battery terminal j. The upper end of the other vertical strip is normally out of contact with its corresponding connectors to a battery terminal, but is adapted to be pressed into contact therewith by means of a screw with an insulating head which forms the switching means. The lens g and reflector f<1> are carried by a cap or sleeve g<3> adjustably mounted on a screw-threaded collar e<1> secured on a sleeve e mounted on the battery casing. A hinged cover p on the casing is adapted to be secured by a padlock engaging a ring and hasp connection p<1>, p<2>. The hasp p<2> may be provided with a lateral projection p<3> to engage a pin or other projection on the lens sleeve g' to prevent rotation of the latter.
