Abstract

499,010. Transformers. BRITISH THOMSON -HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 1, 1938, No. 19588. Convention date, July 1, 1937. [Class 38 (ii)] In a polyphase transformer the phase wind ings 1, 2, 3, Fig. 2, are arranged in planes which form the sides of a prism, adjacent limbs of the windings being surrounded by iron cores 4, 5, 6. The cross-sections of the windings are arranged so that the resultant sections surrounded by the cores are circular. In a modification the windings are arranged so that the resultant sections are rectangular. The cores may be formed by metal strip wound in spiral form, or may be built up from flat plates, or may be formed from metal rings through which the windings are threaded, or may be formed from a number of single turn strips 7 as shown in Fig. 7.
