[Class 38 (ii)] A transformer comprises a centrally disposed core leg a formed of radial or involute laminations and a number of packets d<SP>1</SP> ... d<SP>8</SP> of U-shaped laminations forming a magnetic return path external to the windings b, c. The packets may comprise a number of U-shaped stampings or may be built up from rectangular stampings, Fig. 4 (not shown). The stampings are held together by bindings of cord g<SP>1</SP>, and at their ends by welding at el. Plates e<SP>2</SP> are welded on to the yoke parts to enable the packets to be drawn tightly against the central core by bolts passing through corresponding plates e<SP>8</SP> welded to the ends of the core. Cooling pipes m or corrugations h formed in the casing are located between the packets of laminations.
