Abstract
145,869. Robinson, C., and Chamney, R. M. April 1, 1919. Telephonic repeaters; phantomcircuit systems.-In telephonic repeaters of the kind in which a transformer has two sets of line windings and also additional windings connected respectively to the input and output circuits of an amplifier, the transformer is so designed that the amplified current in the output windings does not produce a flux in the core of the input winding. The transformer A, Fig. 1, has three limbs, of which the outer ones carry the line windings B, B<1>, and the central limb C carries the input winding connected to the grid circuit of the valve amplifier D, the plate circuit of which is connected to windings E, E<1> on the outer limbs. Speech currents over either line act through the coil C on the grid circuit, the plate current producing magnified effects in both line circuits, but equal and opposite effects upon the coil C and input circuit. Two such repeaters may be cross-connected so that the magnified current from the amplifier fed by one transformer is supplied to the other transformer, and one of the line windings of each transformer is connected to an artificial line. The invention is also applicable to the repeaters described in Specifications 131,113 and 131,114; and to phantomcircuit working. The transformer is formed of a number of E-shaped stampings of two kinds arranged alternately so as to form a core which is continuous with the exception of two narrow air-gaps H, Fig. 8, in the outer limbs of the core. The one kind of stamping has all its limbs of the same length and long enough to reach from one side of the core to the other; the other kind is made with two body parts, each having two short outer limbs and a central limb which is integral with the other. The stampings are clamped by bolts between wood blocks, and the whole enclosed in a sheet-iron case. An additional winding may be provided on the transformer to listenin at the repeater station.
