Abstract
498,827. Making electric incandescent lamps. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and COWHIC, W. T. July 13. 1937, No. 19403. [Class 39 (ii)] In mounting the refractory filament 1 of a lamp within a tubular envelope 2 of quartz or like heat-resisting transparent or translucent vitreous material provided with drawn-down ends into which the filament leading-in conductors are sealed, the seal for at least one of the conductors is formed at a point spaced a distance A from the body of the envelope and, after the envelope has been evacuated and sealed by means of a tube 6, the part A is heated to soften it and the filament is tautened by drawing apart the lead-in conductors while the part A is in a softened condition. In the example the ends of the filament 1 are attached to lengths of wire 3 which, at their other ends, are connected to strips 4 of molybdenum foil, these latter being connected to thicker molybdenum strips 5. The seal is ma,de in the usual manner at the foil 4.
