Abstract
448,340. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and DAVIES, L. J., 147, Murray Road, and SCOTT, W. J., 16, Oval Road, both in Rugby. Dec. 5, 1934, No. 34961. [Class 39 (i)] A sodium lamp is provided with an outer envelope 5, Fig. 1, of ordinary glass and with an inner envelope 1, which is made of material not attacked by sodium and is closed at its ends by tightly fitting moulded caps 2, preferably of ceramic or vitreous material, in which the leading-in wires are secured. The inner envelope may be reinforced by wire or mesh or by a glaze on the internal surface thereof, and the caps may be tapered or spigotted and may be ground. Both envelopes may be exhausted simultaneously by the provision of a capillary tube 6 and subsequently, neon is introduced and a capule 7 heated by means of a high-frequency coil to release sodium vapour. Condensed sodium will block the tubes 6 during operation. In another form, a single-ended tube 10, Fig. 2, is closed by a cap 11 and is surrounded by a vacuum jacket. The joint will be sealed by condensed sodium vapour. Glass wool 12 reduces the thermal radiation from the lamp to the pinch.
