Abstract
498,037. Valve circuits for wireless reception. FERRANTI, Ltd., and TAYLOR, M. K. June 24,1937, No. 17542. [Class 40 (v)] A high-frequency amplifier in which one side-band is partially suppressed, particularly for a television receiver, is designed to have an unsymmetrical substantially-triangular characteristic as shown, for example in Fig. 3, the highest modulation frequency to be reproduced corresponding to the apex a of the triangle and .the carrier corresponding to a point b on the more-gradually sloping side at which the amplification is between one-fifth and onethird of that at a. This arrangement compensates for the absence of part of one sideband and also for loss of response at high frequencies at other points in the system. In the intermediate-frequency amplifier shown in Fig. 1, the desired characteristic is obtained by the inductively-coupled circuits 8, 13, 14 ; 10, 15, 16 winch are each tuned to the highest modulation frequency and are given different decrements. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the circuit 8 ... 16 has a substantiallyuniform band-pass characteristic, but this is modified by the inclusion in the cathode lead of a circuit tuned to the highest modulation frequency. In a multi-stage amplifier, the required characteristic may be produced for the amplifier as a. whole or for each stage separately.
