Abstract
A cast compound roll having a shell of unalloyed or alloyed white or grey cast-iron with a shore hardness of 45-100 DEG is formed with a core of an alloyed or unalloyed steel having a carbon content of from 0,5-2,0 per cent. In an example, the core contains approximately 0,55 per cent carbon, 0,8 per cent manganese, 0,25 per cent silicon, 0,06 per cent phosphorus, and 0,05 per cent sulphur, and the chilled cast-iron shell contains approximately 3,5 per cent carbon, 3,5 per cent manganese, 3,0 per cent nickel, and 1,5 per cent chromium. Other elements such as nickel, chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum may be present in the core. The casting temperature of the steel approaches the melting temperature of the cast-iron shell sufficiently closely to avoid melting of the latter when the core is cast on to it.
