Abstract

Rails are made from steel with lamellarpearlitic structure containing less than 0,9 per cent of carbon, 0,6-0,8 per cent of manganese and up to 0,3 per cent of molybdenum. Small amounts of one or more further double carbide forming elements such as chromium up to 0,5 per cent, tungsten up to 0,7 per cent, vanadium up to 0,2 per cent may be present singly or together, in which case the manganese content may be reduced to about 0.5 per cent. There may also be present, silicon 0,2 to 0,3 per cent, phosphorus and sulphur below 0,04 per cent. An example containing a small proportion of copper is also referred to.
