Abstract

496,104. Spring frames for cycles. ROHNER, E. June 16, 1938, No. 17903. Convention date, June 16, 1937. [Class 136 (iii)] In spring frames for motor and other cycles comprising upper and lower frame members extending between the steering-head and the seat tube or rear fork and consisting of leaf springs or of pivoted rigid bars, the end portions of the frame members are acted upon by reinforcing springs, such as short leaf springs, which are so arranged as to prevent fracture of the frame members at or near their points of attachment to the head and seat tube or rear fork. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the frame members 4, 4a between the head 7 and the seat tube consist of leaf springs having curved forward ends connected together behind the head 7 and secured thereto by cross-bolts 8 passing through lugs 7<1> on the head, a stressed leaf spring 3 reinforcing the curved end portions. The rear end of the spring 4 is secured by bolts 6 in a channel-shaped socket 1, and is reinforced on both sides by short leaf springs 5. The rear end of the spring 4a is similarly secured in a socket 2 and reinforced by springs 5a. In the lady's bicycle frame shown in Fig. 3, the front ends of the main leaf springs 4, 4a are doubled back so as to overlap, and are reinforced by a short leaf spring 3. A curved leaf spring 9 is interposed between the springs 4, 4a, and is provided at its upper end with a guide ring 10 slidably engaging a plate 11. The overlapping parts of the main and reinforcing springs may be clamped together, as by clips. In a further form, the upper and lower frame members consist of rigid bars of channel section, pivoted at their ends to the head and seat tube, and acted upon by short leaf springs adjacent the pivots.
