[Class 39 (i)] In electron multipliers of the type comprising a series of secondary electron emitting surfaces at progressively increasing potentials, accelerat. ing electrodes are disposed to co-operate with the secondary electron emitting surfaces and are energized to a higher potential. The Figure shows the invention embodied in an electron multiplier as described in Specification 495,438 comprising a source of electrons 4, a series of secondary electron emitting surfaces 9, 9a, 9b and a collecting electrode 15 at successively increasing potentials. In front of each of the surfaces 9 is disposed an accelerating electrode 26, 26a, 26b formed of fine wires or otherwise in such manner as to provide minimum electron pick-up, and at a potential higher than the surface 9 ... 9b with which it is associated. This potential may be derived from an independent source or by connecting each accelerating electrode to the secondary emitting surface next in the series.
