Abstract

494,579. Aircraft controls. TAMPIER, R. April 22, 1937, Nos. 11522 and 12948. [Class 4] Means for controlling or preventing movement of control surfaces or other moving aircraftparts include a ball and socket, the socket being made in two relatively adjustable parts to vary their frictional engagement with the ball. In one form, the pivot of a bell-crank lever 7 through which the control effort is transmitted to an aileron is formed by a ball 5 located between cup elements 3, 4 housed in a member 2 mounted in a member 1 on, e.g. the wing spar. The load on the ball may be adjusted to ultimately lock the control by means of a cam 8 operated by the pilot and acting through a spring 10. The cam may be replaced by screw mechanism. In a modification, the ball 5 forms the hinge pivot between the wing and aileron. In a further modification, adjustable cup elements are disposed on opposite sides of and are adapted to engage a ball carried by a lever connected to part of a retractable undercarriage member. The levers operating the various devices are arranged side-by-side and may be simultaneously operated by a T- or U-shaped lever.
