529,892. Controlling aircraft. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., Sir W. G., and LLOYD, J. June 10, 1939, No. 17057. [Class 4] An auxiliary flap 14 lying normally flat in the upper surface of the wing and adapted, when raised, to spoil the lift, is connected with each aileron 11 or main flap so as to be raised only when the aileron or main flap is moved in one direction to a relatively large extent. The flap, which is hinged to the wing and adapted to nest in a slot 15 is provided with an arm 17 connected by a pin- and-slot lost motion device 18 with a spring link 19 pivoted to an arm 21 on the aileron. For small movements of the aileron, an auxiliary flap remains on the surface of the wing, but for a large downward movement of the aileron, the flap 14 is raised as shown. The ailerons may be operated differentially.
