Abstract
748,094. Aircraft ailerons. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd. Aug. 27, 1954 [Sept. 2, 1953], No. 24323/53. Class 4. A fixed wing aircraft has ailerons 11, each operated by at least one servo tab 12, and resilient means urging each aileron downwardly so as to reduce or eliminate the tendency of the aileron to be deflected upwardly from the position in which it forms a smooth continuation of the wing, when the aileron is left free to set itself in normal flight. As shown, the aileron is formed with a portion 13 penetrating into a compartment in the wing 10 and, with a flexible sealing strip 15, divides the said compartment into two parts communicating with the upper and lower surfaces of the wing. The flap 12 is similarly arranged on the aileron. A torsion bar 18 extending parallel to the pivot axis 14 has one end fast with the aileron, and the other journalled in a bearing 22 in the portion 13 and fast to a link 19 pivoted to a further link 20 pivoted to the wing at 21, so that deflection of the aileron twists the torsion bar 18. When the aircraft is stationary or at landing or take-off speed, the bar 18 deflects the aileron to its downmost position, giving high lift. In normal flight, the aileron if left free, assumes a position which renders it a smooth continuation of the wing. The torsion bar assists in mass balancing the aileron.
