Abstract
755,629. Helicopters. SHORT BROS. & HARLAND,Ltd. Jan. 5, 1955 [Dec. 24, 1953], No. 35864/53. Class 4. In a helicopter of the kind incorporating only a single rotor which is of the hingeless or non- articulated type or which is of the type having articulated blades whereof the flapping hinges are off-set from the axis of rotation by an appreciable proportion (say from 15 to 20 per cent) of the radius of the rotor disc and wherein cyclic pitch control is provided to load the advancing blade more heavily than the retreating blade, the centre of gravity is off-set with respect to the axis of the rotor on the side at which the blades advance. The embodiment shown has non-flapping blades and the position CG of the centre of gravity is located forward and off-set from the rotor axis R on the side of an advancing blade B. To maintain lateral stability the blades have a greater pitch angle when advancing than when retreating which has the effect of increasing the loading of the blades when advancing and thereby moving the aerodynamic centre of the rotor sideways to lie in a vertical longitudinal plane passing through the point CG. Such arrangement also enables higher forward speeds to be attained. The forward location of the point CG with respect to axis R maintains longitudinal stability by providing a restoring moment when the aircraft pitches upwardly under external influence.
