Abstract
1380252 Helicopter rotor blades DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 21J an 1972 [21 Jan 1971] 2844/71 Heading B7W A helicopter rotor blade 1 is provided at its tip with a member 2 of aerofoil section which is hinged to the blade along an axis substantially chordwise of the blade, and has control means 9 to flap the member 2 in the opposite direction to the blade during rotation thereof. The blade 1 is provided with a forwardly protruding portion 3 to which the hinged portion member 2 is attached, and portion 3 and member 2 are provided with weights 4 and 5 respectively, at their forward extremities. Control of the setting of the member 2 is effected by means of a link 9 of carbon fibre reinforced plastics material extending spanwise from the member 2 to a second link 10 at the blade root, the link 9 being encapsulated in oil and supported on needle rollers. The link 10 is connected to a control (11), Fig. 2 (not shown), in the rotary hub. The member 2 is formed of silicon glass fibre roving reinforced plastics covered with a carbon fibre reinforced plastics skin, the carbon fibres being orientated to resist centrifugal stresses. The hinge (8), Fig. 4 (not shown), comprises a skin of plastics material reinforced with either silicon glass roving fibres or boron fibres. The blade is mounted at the root by means of a tube 6.
