Abstract

558,047. Controlling aircraft. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., Sir W. G., and LLOYD, J. July 21, 1942, No. 10162. [Class 4] A flap or other aerofoil is supported at the trailing edge of another aerofoil by a link and by a projection on one of the aerofoils engaged with a cam surface on the other aerofoil so that one aerofoil can nest against the other or be moved rearwardly to provide a slot between the two, the parts being so arranged that when the aerofoil is so moved it is resistant to turning moments due,to wind pressure without any substantial reaction upon the actuating-mechanism. A wing flap 13 is mounted on a link 15 pivoted at 16 to the trailing edge of the wing near its upper surface, and a projection 18 on the flap carries a pin 19 which works in a cam slot 20 in a bracket 21 carried by the wing. A hydraulic jack 22, 23 moves the flap and in the extended position the moment due to wind pressure on the flap is taken by the link 15 and pin 19. A slot-forming, independently movable aileron 14 is mounted at the trailing edge of the flap by a link 27 and a pin and slot connection as described in Specification 558,046 and is actuated as shown in Fig. 3 by links 32, 36 arms 33, 35 and chain and sprocket gear 34 carried by the link 15.
