Abstract

Steering and balancing.-The lifting effect of the planes of aeroplanes is varied by adjusting ailerons pivoted under the plane on axes parallel to, but a certain distance behind, the leading edge. These ailerons may be used in conjunction with ordinary ailerons at the rear edge for turning the aeroplane without the use of a rudder. Fig. 1 shows a hinged aileron 13 under the leading edge and operated by cords 14 attached to an arm 15 and passing over a pulley 16. In practice, these ailerons would be received in recesses under the plane when withdrawal, so as to present no projection. Turning may be effected by lowering the front aileron at one side of the aeroplane and lowering the ordinary rear aileron at the other side so as to brake the machine on the latter side. One or more front ailerons may be placed between the side ailerons 13. The rear ailerons may be arranged at an angle to the trailing edge of the plane.
