Abstract
558,046. Controlling aircraft. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., Sir W. G., and LLOYD, J. July 21, 1942, No. 10160. [Class 4] An aileron or flap at the trailing edge of another aerofoil is guided by a projection thereon engaging a cam surface fast with the aerofoil and is also linked to the aerofoil, the cam surface being so shaped that when the aileron or flap is in its neutral or uptilted position there is no slot between it and the aerofoil but when moved in the other direction its leading edge separates from the aerofoil to provide a slot. The wind pressure assists the movement of the flap during its passage from the neutral to the extreme rear position. As shown, an aileron 18 is normally nested with its forward upper surface beneath the trailing edge of a flap 13 mounted as described in Specification 558,043. A point 30 on the aileron is connected by a link 27 to a bracket on the flap and a projection 31 on the aileron moves in a cam slot formed in a plate 32 secured to the flap. From the neutral position to the extreme uptilted position the projection 31 moves in a part 33 of the slot concentric with the point 30 which remains stationary. From the neutral position to the extreme rearward and downward position the projection 31 moves in a part 34 of the slot and the link 27 swings about its upper end thus causing a slot to open between the aileron and the flap. The aileron is moved by a link 25 connected to a point 26 on the aileron and to a bellcrank lever 24, Fig. 3, linked to an arm 21 pivoted at the junction of a projection 14 on the flap and a link 15, the arm 21 having a sprocket coupled by a chain 22 to a sprocket on another arm 20 at the other end of the link 15 where the latter is pivoted to the main wing.
