Abstract
550,713. Controlling aircraft. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., and SMITH, J. P. Aug. 29, 1941, No. 11083. [Class 4] An aerofoil fitted with a flap or other movable surface adapted to form a slot 17 through the aerofoil when depressed has a rotor 14, at the leading edge of the flap, which is rotated in the direction of the arrow, when the flap is depressed, to accelerate the flow over the upper surface of the flap. Alternatively one or more permanent slots may be formed in the flap as shown in Fig. 4 and the rotor 14 mounted within the slot. A similar rotor may be mounted at the leading edge of a Fowler flap. An independently moveable control surface 11a may be mounted at the rear edge of any of the flaps described. The rotor 14 may be grooved, slotted or bladed to increase its effectiveness and may be driven from the aeroengine or by any auxiliary motor.
