Abstract

778,185. Towed aerial targets. BAYNES AIRCRAFT INTERIORS, Ltd. Dec. 3, 1953 [Dec. 4, 1952], No. 30826/62. Class 4. A towed aerial target comprises a fuselage, a pair of swept back main wings near the rear of fuselage, a pair of swept back secondary wings or stabilizers near the front end of the fuselage, and control units hinged to the stabilizers and providing control surfaces, being biased in one direction and movable in flight about the hinges against their bias to provide an automatic and progressive change in life on the forward stabilizers as speed increases. As shown, each of the forward stabilizers 14 is provided with a control unit 18 pivoted on a rod 26, 37 and has pivoted to it at the trailing edge of its under surface a servo-tab 33. A lug 36 on the tab is pivoted to a link 34 in turn pivoted to the stabilizer on a lug 35. The two rods 26, 37 mounting the control units are universally pivoted at 38, 39 to a rod 40 journalled in the aircraft, a lever 43 fast thereto being pivoted to a link 44 spring biased by spring 47 to bias the control units in the down position, in which tab 33 forms a smooth continuation of the control unit surfaces. The tabs are of such area that as airspeed is increased, the tab and control surface move against the spring bias to the position shown in Fig. 3, reducing the lift. A plate 30 fast with the control unit structure is provided with holes 29, and a lug 28 fast to the rod 26 is provided with a hole 27 which may be keyed to any hole 29 to preset the control units. The two units may be preset differently, and a dihedral provided on the stabilizers, to give a yawing moment for off-set towing. Rudders provided on the rear main wings may also be preset to assist off-set towing. Specification 778,184 is referred to.
