Abstract
558,045. Controlling aircraft. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., Sir W. G. LLOYD, J., and LAKE, R. A. July 21, 1942, No. 10159. [Class 4] An aileron mounted at the trailing edge of a wing flap which is supported from the wing by two or more pairs of arms is movable independently of the flap and is so mounted that the aileron is displaced to open a slot between it and the flap when tilted downwardly but not when tilted upwardly. The flap is of the extension type mounted on links as described in Specification 558,043. The aileron 18 in its normal position has its forward upper surface nested closely beneath the trailing edge of the flap. A projection 31 on the aileron moves in a camslot formed in a plate 32 on the flap. The lower part 33 of the slot is concentric with a point 30 on the aileron which is connected by a link 27 to a bracket on the flap, so that a pull on a link 25 connected to a point 26 on the aileron causes the latter to tilt upwards about the point 30, which remains stationery without opening a gap. Movement of the link 25 in the opposite direction causes the projection 31 to follow a part 34 of the cam slot and the aileron moves rearwardly and tilts downwardly guided by the slot and the link 27. The link 25 is moved by the lever 24 link 23 and arms 21, 20 pivoted coaxially with the ends of the forward suspension link 15 of the flap, the arms being rigid with sprockets connected by a chain 22. The aileron may be mounted on the outer of two flaps extending substantially the whole length of the trailing edge of the wing as described in Specification 558,044.
