Abstract
417,898. Controlling aircraft. FAIREY, C. R., Cranford Lane, Hayes, Middlesex. Oct. 26, 1933, No. 29733. [Class 4.] In aeroplane controls in which the camber of the wings can be varied at part or the whole of their length, simultaneously in the same direction without interfering with the capability of varying the camber differentially, as set forth in Specifications 135,520, 135,521, and 135,522, [all in Class 4], the trailing portions of the ailerons are split into upper and lower parts and each of the lower parts may be depressed at will relatively to and simultaneously with the depression of the aileron of which it forms a part without interfering with the capability of depressing the lower parts independently of the ailerons. In one form, each aileron 12 has upper and lower articulated parts 13, 14 spring influenced normally to closed position and connected by cables 15, 16 to one arm of a bell-crank lever 17, the other arm of which is connected by a cable 18 passing over guide pulleys 19, 20, 21 and connected to a nut 22 on a screwed shaft 23 rotatable through bevel gears 24, 25 to open the parts 13, 14 by means of a hand-wheel 26 which may be connected through a clutch 28, to facilitate simultaneous actuation of the parts 13, 14 and the ailerons, to a hand-wheel 27 by which the ailerons are operated. The bellcrank levers are normally urged to the off position by a spring 35 acting through cables 32. A cable 37 is attached to a lug on each aileron and passes over guide pulleys 38, 39, 40 and 50 and is lapped over a drum 50<a> mounted on the shaft of the hand-wheel 27, rotation of which actuates the ailerons differentially. The pulleys 50 are carried by nuts 51 adjustable towards and away from each other to operate the ailerons simultaneously in the same direction, by rotation through ahandwheel 54 and a chain 56 of a right-and-lefthand screw-threaded shaft 52 mounted in bearings 53. The wing may have flaps 57 movable together in the same direction and with the ailerons through cables 58 connected to the nuts 51. The lower parts 14 may also be operated through a link 31 by auxiliary aerofoils 29 pivotally mounted on the ailerons 12. In a further modification, the lower part 14 is connected through links 63, 65, Fig. 4, and a radius rod 64 with a slot-forming slat 66 so that depression of the parts 14 moves the slats 66 forwardly to form slots. The upper part 13 may be integral with the main part of the aileron and the ailerons of a slotted wing may be provided with auxiliary aerofoils similar to the aerofoils 29.
